Congratulations, it’s a book
Oh my gods….
I have it. The Advanced Reader Copy version of my novel. St. Martin’s Press Fed-Exed it to me yesterday.
It’s a book. It’s a freakin’ book! It’s, like, real. And in my hands.
The Advanced Reader Copy, or ARC, is the initial version of the novel. It’s the one that goes to bookstores, wholesalers, other authors and reviewers.
If I’m gushing, you have to remember that I’ve lived with these characters for a decade. Tommy, Kiki, Susan, Ray, Daria: They’ve been bouncing around in my skull since 1999. But for all of that time, the story was a bunch of 8-and-a-half by 11 sheets of paper, held together with rubber bands, with notes scribbled in the margins in pencil or red pen.
It’s been a novel, sure. But it hasn’t been a book.
Now it’s a book.
