Based on this week’s news – that the official book launch for “Crashers” is set for 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 26, at Powell’s Books, 3415 SW Cedar Hills Blvd., Beaverton – I have to share this anecdote.
When I was a mystery writer, 15 years ago, my paperbacks were published by Bantam Books. But the British publisher Severin House also published two of my books in hardback. The problem was: the dollar vs. the pound sterling made my hardbacks noxiously expensive in the States.
Powell’s didn’t care. I was a Northwest novelist, and Powell’s is so loyal to NW writers that they bought my book and sold it… at a loss. That’s right. Powell’s sold my novel at less than they bought it for. THAT’S how much they support local writers.
