Will Speak For Food
Katy King is president of the Portland Chapter of Sisters in Crime. Last night, the guest speaker was an agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (I’m from Idaho; in our high schools, you could letter in those things).
I went, figuring I could pick up some valuable information. Halfway though the dinner, Katy leaned over, kissed me, and said, “Darling? If she doesn’t show up, you’re our backup.”
Sure enough, she didn’t. So for an hour, I got up and talked about the writing process and mystery writing in general. All without notes.
Now let’s be fair: This group asked terrific questions. Those questions were the kindling that kept the conversational fire going, It wasn’t an hour-long lecture, it was a great dialog between the audience and me.
But the old joke proves true: The most dangerous place in Oregon is between me and a microphone.
