Been There … Or Have I?
Setting can be all-important.
I wrote a scene for an upcoming novel that was action-oriented but which also obscured an important “reveal” to spring on the reader later in the book.
The first draft was OK but no great shakes. The second draft was better but … dunno, still missing something.
It wasn’t the characters. The dialog seemed OK.
Then I moved the entire damn scene from someplace ho-hum to Venice, Italy.
The scene sparkled. The words came so fast from my hand, I kept breaking pencil leads. It was like, “Holy Hannah! THAT’S the impact I was looking for!”
Just changing venues can be all you need to make that scene sparkle.
