Venice On My Mind
Peter Ackroyd’s wonderful non-fiction book, VENICE: PURE CITY, is the most fun doing research from an armchair I’ve ever experienced.
I’m setting a couple of pivotal scenes at the beginning of Act II in Venice, a city I have loved for years. It’s the perfect setting for a mystery, which its dodgy history (throughout the centuries it has been the city of thievery and subterfuge), dark and winding alleys, and gilded facades hiding hiding crumbling abodes.
Ackroyd also wrote LONDON: A BIOGRAPHY. His history of Venice is loving and painstaking, poetic and probing.
Of course, any book is only so good when it comes to research. Nothing beats “boots on the ground.”
And yes: that plan is in the works too.
