Taking a Lesson from a Classic

Sometimes it’s good to go back to the basics.Notorious-alfred-hitchcock-865373_1024_768

Katy and I re-watched “Notorious” last weekend. It’s Alfred Hitchcock’s great 1946 spy thriller/love story set in Brazil, starring Cary Gant, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains and Louis Calhern.

It’s good to see a classic tale told well, especially when you’ve seen it before and you can focus less on the plot and more on the structure and the storytelling.

Idiot that I am, I was halfway through it when I realized John Woo’s 2000 thriller “Mission Impossible II” was an attempted remake of the story. Don’t get me wrong: I enjoyed “MI-II.” But that’s still one hell of a stretch.
